Interesting fact; did you know that the average CEO reads one book per week, according to this article at Inc. Magazine? One of the most common tips for improving your business or improving in your career, is to read. But why should you read (or at least listen to the audio versions)? Well, there is always more to learn! In addition, why would you want to waste your valuable time making mistake after mistake, when you could learn all the right moves from people who have made the mistakes for you?
I'm glad you're sold on reading real estate books but which ones should you read? There are so many! There are tens of thousands of them on Amazon and more are written every day! Luckily for you, I've done all the heavy lifting for you. I have networked with top producers from around the country from sites like Active Rain and Lab Coat Agents and discussed with them the 12 books that have most impacted their real estate business and that they consider to be the best books for real estate agents.
I'm going to start off this list with the three most recommended books about the real estate industry:
While this is a real estate book, it's message is so powerful that it's being taught in the corporate world, in churches and in schools. It teaches you the concept of a singular focus. That focus will help you identify and use "The One Thing" that will keep you laser focused on succeeding in your business and life.
The Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller -
This book is widely considered to be the "Real Estate Industry Bible." It was written over 13 years ago by Gary Keller, of Keller Williams fame, and still holds true to this day. Coaches, mentors, Brokers, team leaders... and not just ones within Keller Williams recommend this book. It is based on Gary's own experiences and those of several major producing agents and brokers he’s known. The Millionaire Real Estate Agent, or "MREA" as it's fans like to call it, offers a wide array of business advice, templates that are designed to help agents do more business and make more money.
"Whether you are just getting started or a veteran in the business, The Millionaire Real Estate Agent is the step-by-step handbook for seeking excellence in your profession and in your life."--Mark Victor Hansen, cocreator, #1 New York Times bestselling series Chicken Soup for the Soul
"This book presents a new paradigm for real estate and should be required reading for real estate professionals everywhere."--Robert T. Kiyosaki, New York Times bestselling author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad
Shift: How Top Real Estate Agents Tackle Tough Times by Gary Keller
We've all heard talk for a number of years now about how "the bubble will burst" or how "the real estate market is going to crash." While it may seem like "Chicken Little" to some, experienced agents know that the real estate market, like all things, is cyclical. In other words "what goes up, must come down." This book aims to prepare you for when the market turns, by getting you to explore other strategies to succeed.
Kevin is an internationally recognized real estate trainer. In this book, he covers some of his most powerful scripts for prospecting, working with buyer and sellers, and for handling objections. He even teaches you how to memorize and internalize the scripts and how to tweak them for different situations.
The Miracle Morning for Real Estate Agents: It's Your Time to Rise and Shine by Hal Elrod and Michael J. Maher
This book covers a morning ritual that is meant to re-invigorate you, re-energize you, and get you moving with purpose.
The HyperLocal HyperFast Real Estate Agent: How to Dominate Your Real Estate Market in Under a Year, I Did it and so Can You! by Daniel James Lesniak
This book covers the tactics that Dan used in 2012 to, as a new agent, buck the industry trends of low performance and complete over 36 deals worth over $22 million (by volume). This made him one of the most successful rookie real estate agents in the history of real estate. He then took over one of the most competitive market areas in the country. This book teaches you his framework to enter a new market area or to increase your penetration in your existing market(s). It will help you discover how to add more value for your clients and how to communicate your value proposition to all.
Endless Referrals, Third Edition by Bob Burg
In this fully revised third edition, Bob builds on his proven principles to bring you even more clients and most importantly, ones that are pre-disposed to wanting to buy what you're selling. He also shows you how to maximize your daily contacts, how to use various tools both online and off, how to leverage your existing relationships, and generate ongoing sales opportunities.
The E-Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It by Michael E. Gerber
This book points out how common assumptions, expectations, and even how technical expertise in your business, can actually get in the way of running a successful business! Michael walks you through the various stages of a business's life and show you how to apply these principles to your business. He also discusses the difference between working on your business and working in your business.
Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell
This, along with his book "Tipping Point" (which is the next book on the list) are two books that I believe should be on EVERYONE'S bookshelf. This book explores what makes exceptional people exceptional. What makes the Bill Gateses and the Mark Cubans of the world?
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcom Gladwell
This book covers that moment when a thought, a product or even a video crosses that threshold and goes from just another thing to a viral sensation.
As I started this list with a collection of the what many people believe are the "classics of our era", I will end with some of the greatest books ever written on the subject of sales and motivation.
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
This book is credited as the reason for the success behind more millionaires and billionaires than any other book! "Think and Grow Rich" is the most famous book by Napoleon Hill and covers all of the fundamentals of his success philosophy.
How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie
This time tested book has helped many people succeed by getting the job they want, improving the one they have and in short, making any situation they are in better! It teaches how to get people to like you, how to convince people to agree with you and how to subtly change people.
That concludes our list of the 12 best books for real estate agents as recommended by their fellow agents. If you diligently apply their principals, the should help you improve your business no matter if you are a new real estate agent or an experienced one.
As an added bonus, I'm going to recommend one book that falls outside the business theme, but I feel is of vital importance to Realtors and Brokers. Real estate is a risky job. While it seems glamorous and easy at times, real estate agents are routinely assaulted at open houses, stalked by members of the public and are even killed! One of the books that has had the greatest impact on my life, and even helped to prolong it, is "The Gift of Fear and Other Survival Signals that Protect Us From Violence" by Gavin de Becker. This book teaches you how to listen to and hone your instincts and that fear is nothing more than a primal instinct that can be harnessed to protect yourself and your family.
